The Medford 14 year olds - a core group of whom has played tournament baseball together since they were 8 - won their sixth consecutive age group title last night at Hartford Crossing.
Trailing 3-2 until Anthony Montefusco hit one out of the park - 335' or so - (he homered and had 2 doubles and pitched six strong innings) the Indians broke the game open and held on through a bases loaded two out situation in the bottom of the seventh to claim a victory over a resilient Sacred Heart squad 11-10, surviving a five run Sacred Heart rally in the seventh.
Last year Medford won each district game by ten runs or more but faced competition this year without key players and had to reach deep down to earn this win.
Anthony Montefusco was the winning pitcher in all three games and John Grady, Zack Hudson and Brad Jones contibuted on the mound. The squad included John Grady, Matt Heinkel (3 for 4 in the final), Zach Hudson, Brad Jones, Shocker LaPierre, Scott Lattimer (2 for 3 in the final), Kevin McDowell, Anthony Montefusco, Nick Rabbutiono and Chris Vonderschmidt all of whom contributed key hits and runs batted in during the tournament.
Friday night's opening game was a 5-1 win over Sacred Heart characterized by the parents' resolve that the game be played (Heinkel, LaPierre, Vonderschmidt, Hudson, Harris, Lattimer, Grady, Montefusco, Jones) - 5 hours of raking and 30 + bags of drying agent - matched by the ballplayers determination and Montefusco's strong right arm. Sunday night was a see-saw battle for an 11-10 win over newcomer Western Monmouth.
Fred Heinkel, Joe Hudson and Ed Vonderschmidt guided the squad this year and had to work hard to fit all the pieces together into a winning package.
