The Pirates scored on a walk-off steal of home (you don't see that everyday)to earn a hard fought 9-8 win over the Cubs Thursday night.
Playing a vastly improved Cubs team, the Pirates struggled allowing 15 walks despite surrendering just one hit.
Defensive gems were turned in by Alex, Conor, Sean G., Mike and Philip as several Cub runners were cut down on the basepaths. The Cubs matched the Pirate defense with several nice plays of their own.
The Pirates threatened all day banging out eight hits, but with the exception of a five run 3rd, the big inning proved elusive.
The pesky Cubs rallied with 3 in the fourth and seemed to seize the momentum in when a two-out Pirate rally was extinguished on a diving catch by the first baseman.
The Pirates regained the momentum when Sean L. struck out the side in the Cub fifth. Jarret led of the home fifth with a walk and after stealing second and third, scored when a pitch squirted away from the catcher.
The Pirate dugout erupted in celebration as the the winning run slid across the plate giving the Pirates a fifth straight win and a 10-2-1 record.
The key to victory was skilfull baserunning as the Pirates repeatedly took an extra base and scored several runs without benefit of a hit. Mike was awarded the gameball for his excellent baserunning and two run-saving plays backing up third base on steal attempts.
Offensive stars included Steve (2b, R, RBI), Jarret (2/2 2R RBI 2b,3b), Josh (2R) and Alex (2/2 1R).
