The Detroit Tigers (Martin) Rookie League team won their first game of the new season over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday evening, 11-3, behind 3 hits each by Matthew Canuso and Ryan Simalchik, improving their record to 1-1. As usual, the Tigers got off to a slow start despite hits by Canuso and Simalchik, leaving the bases loaded in the first. However, a 5-run second inning sparked by hits by Jake Askin and Alec Sozio, and a 4-run third inning ignited by twins Max and Mikey Isles broke the game open. Strong defensive efforts by Griffin Foster, Billy Martin, and James DeLaurentis, Louis Sarandoulious at third base kept the Pirates to just 3 runs in 5 at-bats. Jack Sanborn was impressive behind the plate and colected a big hit in the fourth, driving in a run. When asked about his team's first win, Billy Martin replied "We played good but lost the first game. It feels 50% better winning this one." The Tigers play Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against a tough Arfuso team.
